Adjusting Tappet Clearances

A number of views have been expressed over the years as to the correct tappet clearance for a standard Austin Seven.

I have chosen to use .006 on inlet valves and .007 on exhaust valves.

Method used.....

turn the flywheel until the valve being adjusted is at the maximum open position - note this position on the flywheel

turn the flywheel 360 degrees - one revolution on the flywheel position noted above (this will ensure the camshaft lobe will be 180 degrees off the open position for the valve being adjusted)

adjust the tappet clearance as desired for this valve

repeat the above three steps for each valve......
