Papua New Guinea - 1994 Cars Series Stamp

Papua New Guinea - 1994 Cars Series

This historic stamp from Papua New Guinea, in 1994, shows a 1929 Chummy with a Junkers 631 Tri-motor transport in the background. It belonged to a Dr. Dixon and after being modified by Holdens in Adelaide, South Australia, it was shipped to Lae where it was air lifted from Lae to the goldfields at Wau, a feat that The Austin Magazine of the period claimed to have possibly been the first airlift of a motor car anywhere in the world. The Seven was precariously lifted by a boom and lowered into the aircraft through an open hatch in its roof.
