The RNZAF make their aircraft last because they have to! There being no funds for replacement. The Strikemasters were flown so hard that the RNZAF engineeers were able to tell the makers what would happen next on their test bed! (Cracking wing spars included) I can only tell you what what was common practice regards metals used on Ali - but perhaps best perpsective is that use of any other metal on this substrate was more of a law. To the point that the Stainless steel rulers were taped on the Metric side. (Until the Italian AerMacchi arrived) Admitidly this was also to prevent scratching, and the rulers were ali in the paint shop to prevent sparking if dropped on the concrete floor!
