The (pre war) 15 inch wheels on my special are shod with cross ply Pirellis, ex Fiat Topolino I suspect. 30 years old to my knowledge and hard as a rock and I still worry about the king pins and axle eyes. Pre war, the problem used to be that wheels (rather than kingpins) collapsed, which was why Rod Turner had the 19s on his Ulster rebuilt with heavier guage spokes. He eventually used 16s, cross plys of course, in the Ulster's final single seater form in '38 without collapse of the dicey bits, so perhaps I needn't worry. I am not so sure about people who use relatively sticky bike tyres on the front. I wonder if Frank Hernandez changes the front axle on his special between every meeting?
