I agree with Greg. When you do get it running, the best way to time it is to loosen off the distributor and rotate it until the engine becomes harsh, then back it off a little. Forget anything you read about 1 3/4" before TDC or whatever - this is only a guideline to get it started! The timing must be adjusted dynamically for the best results. Don't advance it too much though as the engine will be rough and unreliable; equally so, it must not be retarded either or it will overheat and be unresponsive - you need every bit of the 12 or 17 bhp it produces! . Leave the distributor loose for a while and drive it down the road, making fine adjustments until it goes at it's best.
