My favourite way to get the ignition timing set is to loosen the distributor slightly and get a helper (usually my six year old son) to press the starter button whilst I rotate the distributor until it fires properly. Then I do what Barry suggested to "fine tune". On a subsequent visit to the rolling road the engineer said that the ignition timing was almost spot on! I have had a miss timed camshaft caused by incorrect markings on a non original "pattern" camshaft timing gear. The only way I sorted it out was to compare the "pattern" gear with a real original item - the relative postion of the key way and the marking was the clue!
