I have used "allen" screws in sevens with engines ranging from clapped to highly tuned, with no problems. They are not "brittle", and will only break under fatigue loading in this application. As with all HT bolts they must be torqued up properly to apply the correct amount of "preload" to overcome fluctuating stresses. I tighten them up really really really tight. Where you can have a problem is if the conrod eye is oval, allowing the piston pin to rock. This can cause cyclic stresses leading to fatigue fracture.
