I am building a racing A7 with a modern Phoenix crank and Renault 4 rods and pistons. Everyone I talk to emphasises how important it is to allow for crank whip.. even with a new crankshaft. This means machining 20 thou off the top of pistons 2 and 3. My problem is that the pistons are 30 thou proud of the block face on a trial assemblyand I am reluctant to take this 30 thou off pistons 1 and 4 together with 50 thou off 2 and 3. The piston crown is about 5.5mm thick. Will I be safe with a 1.5mm solid copper head gasket and only do the 20 thou mod modification to pistons 2 and 3? I would appreciate any help from people who have used these Renault 4 components. Thanks.
