Before the introduction of constant-voltage control, dynamo output was regulated by the "Third Brush" control system. The position of the third brush can be altered to adjust the charging rate of the dynamo. The effect of moving the brush in the direction of rotation of the armature is to increase the output from the dynamo, conversely, moving the brush in the opposite direction reduces the output. This should be set so that the total load, including two headlamps is balanced, with one or two amps charge indicated on the ammeter. The charging rate with all lamps and auxiliaries switched off should not exceed 10-15 amps.

I hope this is of some help
