I run one of my cars without a dynamo, but charge the battery regularly. It does of course tend to run it down severely, especially if the lights are used too. It depends how you use yours. I would say it was better to have the dynamo working, but as the charge control is manual you can easily overcharge without realising. Once again it's up to you. Without a functional (or existant!) dynamo the battery will be be regulary taken into fairly deep discharge states which are not good for it. Despite what most people say, the more one uses a battery, the sooner it wears out, but equally so it must be exercised to some degree to keep it alive. As with most things in life, the extremes wreck it.
