This may not be an answer to your particular question but something for us all to take heed of. I am in the process of doing a motor for a guy in our club, when fitting the valve springs, a small blemish was noticed in the casting. on probing this mark, it was found to be a tiny porous "pop" mark in the cast.
after removing the core plugs either end of the block, it was found that the casting was actually set off to one side when the block was cast. Meaning that when the block was setup for machining originally, it was set to one side too much. Therefore when the seat was cut for the valve spring, it was too close to the water jacket.
There was very little metal left behind, this was obvious when you look at the valve machining, there is a large square corner on one side of the valve seat.
