Unleaded Petrol revisited from the archives…. I have checked with a number of petrol companies over the last few days and the problem Barry has spoken about appears to be a problem in Australia as well. In summary the lead replacement agent here is added to a premium unlead base product. This base product is more volatile then standard unleaded petrol. This is the main reason for it’s shorter storage period – especially in real hot Australia sheds. The maximum recommended storage period is 6 months – this assumes 27 degree and a full suitable container. The unofficial recommendation from the companies I have spoken to is the use a lead replacement additive in standard unleaded petrol. This should provide a long enough storage period for most of us as we tend to “lay up” our Sevens in the cooler months anyway. As for the question of using unleaded petrol without an additive (as many do in South Australia as well) they say that valve recession WILL occur but take many years to show given the low mileage and mostly gentle driving we do.
