Yes, It's the brown stuff which worries me, as it is valuable block material (and head if iron). I planed a late-Ruby head for my special and due to the big valves had to open out the combustion chambers and it broke through. I was able to plug it, but I think it occurred due to years of corrosion and maybe a thin original casting. This is why I rabbit on about antifreeze as it prevents most of this. As for flushing, I think you just have to keep at it and never completely succeed. The lower tuned, standard A7 engine are dirty runners, inefficient, though it hurts to say it. This is why the oil is always so gungy in the sump plate. Interestly, my Ulster attains over 40 mpg on a good run and burns relatively clean, but I have a job to get 30 from the tourer. I think the lack of proper temperature control all adds to the dirty water and oil.
