I also looked at playing a round with a solid state ignition system but because I am sticking with a 6-volt system gave the idea away. If you have converted to a 12-volt system you have many cheap options available. The first question is what is your definition of a solid state electronic ignition system? It can range from a simple “Hall Effect” type module that replaces your points to a fully computer managed system.... The later requires reprogramming of the “chip” (eprom, etc) to change anything. If you just want to get rid of the points then basically any small 4 cylinder (carburettor type model) solid state ignition system could be adapted. A Ford Laser (like a KB model) comes to mind as one example. You can purchase 6-volt electronic systems but the ones I looked at were out of my budget. I spent a lot of time playing with my DK4 distributor (see the DK4 Distributor pages in the Technical Information section of this site). I could never get it as good as using the Bosch 062-406 Distributor that the Melbourne guys developed – well done! I used their advance curve in the end as well. So I keep the DK4 in a clean bag and happily drive around using the Bosch conversion. There are many other distributors that have been adapted over the years. The VW conversion (1959 Bosch I think?) being the other popular one here. It will be interesting to see what others have come up with around the world.
