Actually, the simplest electronic ignition is a transistor-assisted points one, far simpler than the hall-effect you describe. I had one of these on my 1968 Mini Cooper (John Cooper died on 24th December - sad); I still have it, that is the ignition, not the Cooper unfortunately. It broke down in the wet on the M3 due to a sufeit of sparks and I was terrified by the army convoy going past an inch from my ear! Barry.
