Mike,

Some blocks do have two core plugs front and rear, usually a large screwed-in one and a little punched one underneath; these are from about 1929-30 engines. How many base studs does it have, head too and is the base wider than normal, or machined off in a truncated form to fit the crankcase? The really special ones are radically different than normal and unmistakeable usually. The "normal" s/c blocks can be 8 or 10 stud and have various different base configurations such as I have described. The deck, or top of the block may be taller than normal, this occurred on the Grasshopper blocks for instance.
