My long-departed father, an auto-electrician, always told me that the pinion and thread should be shiny clean and dry. Or if you insist, then a tiny bit of very light oil. Any more oil and the inertia effect that makes the pinion engage will be compromised. I find that my starter gets quite sufficient lubrication of all parts from the little bit of oil that finds its way out of the rear crankshaft bearing and is flung up by the flywheel.
