Greg, if you really want to be confused, try this (shades of recent confusion over coolants/additives): My personal lexicon of drive train noises comprises rumbles, growls, whines and howls. A rumble I associate with a bad bearing, (wheel or diff or u-joint or rear gearbox or even main bearings in a 7). A growl to me means gears way too deep in mesh, or broken teeth or bearings. A whine is the most common and I look for meshing and/or backlash faults. Often you can only strike the quietest compromise and live with it. It generally doesn't seem to threaten destruction...remember the early Holdens that always had noisy diffs from brand new? The howl is your "full monty" of maladjustment, worn teeth or bearings, pinion end float etc etc, which can make conversation impossible in a Seven Saloon, believe me! Best of luck.
