Greg Just a few thoughts on diff set ups. I believe that the austin 7 manual by Doug Woodrow has the best information for getting correct mesh of any crown wheel and pinion. Getting correct mesh as shown with bearing blue is achieved by moving the pinion in or out and moving the crown wheel back and forth. Once correct mesh has been found the backlash should be checked, but it is unlikely to be the desired 1/16 inch, particularly on a second hand gear set. The thing to keep in mind here is that correct mesh will give quiet running, not correct backlash. Red lead mixed with a little oil was often used by older mechanics instead of bearing blue and this can give a clearer easier to read tooth marking. Hope that this information is of some use to you and others. regards Keith.
