It can be done and it is covered rather well in the Austin Seven Companion and many other articles, but if racing why bother? Do you have to have a dynamo for your Historic racing? I don't have one on my Ulster, it will travel at least 200 miles without lights on one 12 volt battery charge (about 27 Ah only), it is much faster and the standard starter motor always starts it in any weather - it does spin quite fast. So far it has not jumped off the flywheel!
