I run a 6v CAV dynamo on 12v - no problem. You have to wind the third brush right back (it's easy to cook it the dynamo!) and use a 12v cutout (I'm using the cutout part of a Lucas RB106 as fitted to most 1960's cars.) The starter does spin well and consumes brushes a bit faster than normal but when it's cold that helps. I've never heard of anyone running 12volts thru' an A7 starter having problems. One year I'm going to buy a solid state voltage converter but there's always other things to do first......
