I've got bowden cables on my Ulster rep and they can be made to work well. I started off with new inner cables made by Speedy Cables (who moved out of London last year I think to Dunstable). New inners must help them work better. Also I think that a few companies made Bowden type conversions and the quality and strength of brackets varies. A small flex in the bracket on the cross member will lead to big problems. You need really strong brackets. Also I never use grease - I use an SAE90 oil which at least should stay mobile and not "goo" up. I've got them working with the semi-girling front brakes and with a light fast car they're adequate.
