As the guy who started all this correspondance, I too have come around to thinking how far do you go.
My chummy has corrosion under the doors which goes right through in places, some corrosion on the bits of the wheel arch that touch the steel and some around the spare wheel boss on the back. However, it has taken 70 years to get to that state even in damp old UK and I am sure Herbert's design team were not given a brief to make it last that long. If my attempts last even half that time I'll be 83 and won't care and the oil will have run out anyway!!!
After the advice from various people I have cut out all the worst bits and mig welded in new bits. I am now trying my skills at metal fabrication to see if I can make a new back. If not, I will use the old back after scrubbing with a stainless steel brush.
Thanks to all for the advice.
Graham
