Ian, have checked with my informant. Apparently the talk wasn't at our A7 club but at an Association of Motoring Clubs (17000 members) meeting, but that is incidental. The lecturer did say that the petrol is okay in a sealed jerrycan, but in your car tank and fuel lines it "migrates" (presumably sloshing around) and exposed with the air is good for only one month, even in your lawn mower. (In fact one L/mower manufacturer refuses warranty if you don't use fresh fuel each time!) Co-incidentally, my 1982 Toyota Celica (which I made out of two cars) has just gone into the workshop with a bad miss. My mechanic mate has today phoned to say that due to me using Lead Replacement Petrol an exhaust valve had burned out due to not seating properly. The reason? The LRP leaves a thick coating on everything including the valve seats, even down the valve guides, & the head expert suggests I use Unleaded fuel in future. Can't say how many miles it's taken for that condition (I've done an extra 40 000 k in the 2 years & 2 months I've had it on the road) or whether engine has ever been done up. But it's a worry. Mentioned this to another friend and he told me when he took the head off his Chummy recently everything was coated with an orange-red phosphorous gunk which took some cleaning. He's only ever used LRP in it. And to think I've not used Unleaded so as to avoid valve etc damage in older engines! Over to you. Bill
