If the chassis number isn't on the nearside rail in the position you describe, then look on the same rail in front of the rear engine mounting. You may have to remove a lot of paint to find it!!
In very rare cases, it can also be seen painted along the rear facing side of the rear cross member. Only ever seen this once but is was original.
