Rotor arms

I've just bought a new old stock DJ type rotor arm, but unlike the repro ones it has a long "tail" on it. I notice my old arm has this bit cut off. Should I shorten this one, and what is it for. I've tried it and it works but I don't want to risk damaging it. Cheers Andy
