According to 'Wyatt', Pin type valve spring caps were introduced in January 1935 from Engine No. 213111. This system continued to December 1937 where at Engine No. 283618 Split valve cotters were re-introduced.
The answer, therefore, is that a '36 Ruby should have pin type caps (according to Wyatt). As to the relative merits, both are fiddly as each other to me although if you are short of (or just loose) a pin, they are easy to make from a piece of silver steel!
