I fitted an SU pump to my 1925 12/4 and which uses an autovac to suck fuel from the fuel tank and gravity feed from the autovac to the carb, with more than 3" fall between autovac and carb. I found that the flow of fuel was inconsistent as the engine often ran lean so ended up fitting a dual supply system with the option of switching to either autovac or SU. On the 'go' days (SU carb) I find it best to use the SU pump, and on 'show' days (orig brass Zenith carb) I find it best to use the autovac (because too much pressure from SU for Zenith and mixture ends up too rich as fuel level in carb gets too high). I am aware of one chummy here running an SU carb without a fuel pump and from my memory of travelling in it there were no problems.
