timing wheels

I am putting together a mag engine from spares. I know that the timing wheels were individually fitted originally and that each wheel has a + - figure stamped on it. I assume that the + - figure is thou's but how should they fit together. For instance, does a +5 mate with a +5 or with a -5.

Also - what do the numbers stamped on top of the timing case refer to. I guess they should match, but what else? Any answers gratefully received.
