Why is it that I have always had trouble with broken brake springs, both on a 29 Chummy and 35 semi girling brakes. Both types having the alloy shoe, the spring hook looks fine.

Everything is done correctly, the drums are new, the pivots are new, the metal ends are new, the cams are new. Over the years I have found the only thing I can do to stop this happening is to drill a hole through the shoe and backing plate and hold the shoe against the backing plate with an opened up split pin through the hole.

This indicates to me that the shoe is actually twisting away from the backing plate when the brake is applied. Before I can access the broken spring, it is always mangled too much to work out where it broke, at the hook or along the coils themselves.

I have fixed the 35 problem, as I have sold the car. I still would like to offer the new owner some help if he has the same problem.
