Working on a friends axles at the moment, better not to say his "his backend"!
Have come across an interesting/funny mod. The axles appear to have been cut off and new ends fitted. BUT the keyways are only 3/16 not the usual 1/4. I can't see the reasoning for this as the hubs still have 1/4 keyways.
What could possibly be the reason for this, apart from they maybe did not have a 1/4 woodruff cutter in stock.
It seems against all logic that the woodruff key has to be filed down 3/16 to fit the axles and left at 1/4 for the hubs, is there something I don't grasp in this, maybe it stops the key from turning over. It surely can't turn if it is fitted properly anyway?
The best part is I sent the axles to be recut with 1/4 slots, and they can't be cut as they are hardened on the taper section of the axle. Now the axles are at another shop, having the new 1/4 slot burnt in. I will beat this one yet, I have youth on my side!
Greg.
