GREG/BARRY:

I have just had a quick look through the SU application list (sad I know) which says that Post War (H1)1 1/8" carbs.were fitted to 1959 Frog Eyes (twin), 1947 Morris Z Vans, 1948 - 1956 Morris Minors (side valve and early OHV), 1955 - 1958 Standard 9, 10 and Pennant (twin), 1959-1961 947cc Triumph Heralds (twin) and 1955 100E engined Dellows (twin). In addition, some applications are listed for pre-War 1 1/8" SU but not that many.

In contrast, 1 1/4" SU were fitted to all sorts of cars, particularly with BMC A Series engines and it is from these that the majority of carbs. in the UK seem to come. The one on my Tials Car cost £6-00 and I have two others that both were less than £10-00, all bought from autojumbles etc. Whilst 1 1/8" versions do occur in the UK, they are nowhere near as common and the price increases accordingly. As has been discussed before, which ever carb. is used is somewhat academic as fitted to Sevens, neither fully opens.

The camshaft discussion has also been interesting. I use a cam ground (by Dave Dye)as set down in Williams, ie 50 Thou. ground from the rear of the lobes and this is matched with cam follows again modified as in Williams ie. with the radius increased to 3/4".

At first, I found this a little bit top endy but have now fitted a 5.625 : 1 crown wheel and pinion which has had the effect of making the cam work better and I have found this an excellent combination for both fast (very fast) road use and also Trials when matched with a late Ruby head and a standard three speed box. It has to be said, however, that the car is very light and it may well be that this is the main factor in its performance.
