Interesting terminology in use here - in the UK everyone refers to these things as half-shafts. The word axle is used for the whole assembly, as in front or rear axles. What happens in the US?

There is a school of thought that suggests that you should dispense with the key altogether, as all the forces should be taken by the taper. If the taper isn't good enough, the key certainly is not strong enough, hence breakages. ON my car, I have kept the key, but tighten up the half-shaft nut on every service (ditto the front axle cotter nut), and so far all has been OK.
