You are not going to believe this!
My spare original late model "half shafts" are 7/32" - yes - 5.55mm or .2188".
I think Father Christmas needs to deliver some new measuring devices to selected Austineers!
I haven't even seen a 3/16" versions - maybe early shorter half-shafts featured 3/16 keys?
I do have one repaired shaft (late model again) that has been machined out to 1/4". I quess this is common, at least in Australia. I would think anything bigger then 7/32" isn't ideal. You really want as much meat as possible on the shaft - the tapper does the work.
I would also agree with the school of thought that suggests that you should dispense with the key altogether........ The key causes most of the problems. We don't worry about keys on our morse tappers in the workshop.
Interesting.
Cheers
Bruce
