I think every thing has been covered by the others but I have 2 minor points.
- some members are now "crack" testing blocks prior to carrying out any work, as some cracks are hard to find by a visual inspection and it can save you money in the long run.
- when you are putting the head on, what are you using on the gasket for sealing/movement? I have found out the hard way that the old home made mixture of graphite and heavy grease works by far the best and makes removing the head later very easy. I load the grease as much as possible. I would guess about 50:50 by volume, but this wouldn't be critical.
With regards to the gasket right side/wrong side question.....
I also put the edged side down - also because that was the way my Dad told me to do it! I can't really see how it makes any difference....
Good Luck
Bruce
