Please excuse me replying to my own questions! The idea behind "cheap" oil for the first half hour or so of running is to allow wear to occur in a semi controlled manner. Running in or bedding in is wear. Modern oils are so good that if you put a quality modern oil straight into a new engine it will never bed in. A short run with "cheap" oil, then drain out, will have the further advantage of removing any small metal particles that got in during the rebuilding process. Anyway, that's how it has been explained to me!! Please advise if you know better!! Sean.
