I think that this problem could prove the adage "leave well alone". No one knows what the original was really like! Why strive for perfection when the famous "7" certainly wasn't. On my 27 "chummy" every time I turn the petrol tap on or off (daily usage) I get petrol stains and odours on my fingers. So be the pleasures of vintage motoring.
