John, This may be another manifestation of the leaking petrol tap, sometimes a groove will form around the taper in line with the hole, This lets petrol leak around the groove (but not out of the tap itself) and so down to the carb, If the needle is not making a seal you will, over time empty the contents of your tank over the exhaust pipe.
