Thanks Barry, You might have the answer on fly plates - the railway connection. If so, it wouldn't be the first time, as when Stanley Edge designed the first factory sports he used the term No.18 sweep. When I asked him what that meant, he said there were various curves documented to indicate how much bend there was when the rail-line went off a straight line. I ascertained this when returning to Melbourne - the Royal Melb. Institute of Technology actually had templates of all the different curves. So I may have to find an old railways bod to find out further. Purely academic, so apologies to Bruce for taking up the space. Cheers, Bill
