Ian,
Thanks for looking at "my" problem! Early Chummies don't have the cutout on the inner wing, so there is a loud bang as the brake lever hits where the cutout isn't. It also tends to break the Winkley oiler. I think my springs may well be a little soft, however, they are OK for my usual load of one small child in the back. I fitted the Nobbys in preparation for a holiday on the Isle of Wight next month. The car will have to carry wife & me in the front, and two sons in the back. The oldest is 13, and two years ago the same passengers (but younger & lighter then) were causing the rear suspension to bottom quite often on the rough minor roads they have on the Island. So I think I will keep them fitted until we return to the mainland, then take them off again. Looking closely at the picture in the original advert, there appears to be a board or plate of some sort across the width of the rear seat wells, so I have made a couple of plywood boards and bolted the Nobby plates onto them; I have recessed the bolt-heads into the wood. These then wedge quite nicely into the corner of the front of the rear seat wells (look under an early Chummy to see what I mean). The result of this is that I don't have to drill any holes in the car (something I avoid whenever possible), and there is no danger of the tops of the springs damaging the floorpan.
Regards, David
