I always use a clothes peg too, at least on my tourer.
Some choke controls have grooves, others such as a super one I bought for my special were solid brass and locked with a quarter turn, out almost full. Other, more modern ones, such as Sixties types on Minis etc had a twist and turn spring-locking mechanism which worked well. Problem with some of these and especially some of the repro ones is that the plastic is inferior and they break in half. Also, I bought a couple of original choke controls at Bealieu, but although exactly matching the starter knob (for the 1936 tourer), they were shorter in the ferrule bit mentioned and to activate the choke fully, need to be pulled out until the cable is exposed and they dangle.
Even so, a good (wooden of course) clothes peg works wonders!
