Barry Neville, that sounds like the type I had in about 4 boxes I owned in the 60's, thus my memory hasn't gone totally!!

The current '34 box, has had some odd mod's so perhaps the choke is one of them, I've looked very carefully at the ferrul, but can't see any sign of a nib.

The winters here, and wet autumns, mean's I have to have a bit of choke for a few minutes, it's during this critical stage when I set off for work in the morning, when neither the box or I are totally up and running, that the peg is required. - Yes I use the box as regular transport to work.

I agree it has to be wooden, preferable the type with a .5" tin band around the top held with a tack!
