Modern core, which I knew anyway of course, 22 vertical tubes, the thin connecting matrix is of the elongated oval type if you know what I mean.
Took the opportunity to start it up! Needed Bradex Easy Start, as had not been used for a couple of months. Boost! 9psi in a 1/10 second when blipping the throttle - not that I would do that.... Two other cars in the way, so could not drive it unfortunately - must move house.
Boiled in about 4 minutes at 16 C ambient temperature. No fan fitted. Rad has the normal centre top hose, but the bottom one is near the exhaust side of the rad, which precludes a starting handle being fitted.
I happen to think the early cores are inefficient because they use a lot of material (thick) and are wide-spaced with regard to the tubes. My modern one in my special I built over-cooled and I took off the fan. The Ulster minus fan only boils when stationary, despite its considerable heat output, whereas my '36 tourer boils with the fan when stationary. It has a period rad core.
Barry. P.S Just bought the spiritual successor to the Ulster: http://freespace.virgin.net/john.lovelock4/Montage2.jpg
