Hi All, We all know that 1st and 2nd gear are very "close" and that there is then a big "gap" upto 3rd.
We have heard of some standard engined Chummies fitted with the "Ulster" close ratio gears having difficulty with hills.
Merv Boatwright of Sydney A7 Club has asked me to get quotes for a 2nd gear set which would be 10-12% higher that standard. I have come up with a combination of 18/22 teeth which will give a 2nd gear ratio of 1.636 compared to the standard of 1.82 and the "Ulster" of 1.42. In other words the new ratio would be 11% higher that standard but not as high as the "Ulster". In fact it sits about halfway between the 2. All other ratios stay the same.
The advantage of this mod would be that you still have standard 1st gear for those really steep hills and you would have a new set of gears to replace the growly/worn out 2nd that most chummies seem to have..and of course you wouldnt have to "thrash" the poor thing in 2nd just to get it into top !!
One of the 2 new gears needed unfortunately has internal splines and also the "dog" gear on its front which gives us 3rd gear..making it an expense bit of machining.
The best quote we can get in Perth is $AUD600 per set for upto 10, and $AUD550 per set for 10 and over. (Sydney quotes are much dearer.) These gears are new manufacture from solid and not "welded".
Between a few guys in Sydney and Perth we have 7 requests so far. If anyone is interested please contact myself on e-mail or phone 089 3302370 or our Spares Officer Tito Teraci on 089 2742438. The arrangement would have to be "money up front" with cheques for $AUD600 (should well and truly cover postage) payable to Austin Seven Car Club of WA Inc sent to Tito Teraci or myself. Any discounts we achieve through numbers will ofcourse be refunded.
Hope this helps Harry Pyle 71 Cawston Rd Attadale West Australia 6156
