Dennis - although the metric measurements are "foreign" to me, certainly the 1/8" you mentioned is far too thick. I've found 16 gauge mild steel strips are adequate, but if you don't know, DO NOT gas-weld, use MIG or TIG, tack first about every 6 or 7", then alternate your welding between chassis rails, otherwise you'll have very warped rails. It sounds like you need to buy or borrow or photocopy Bill Williams' book "Austin Seven Specials" - it'll help you with most of your work on the car, engine included. Cheers, Bill
