How were the original rivets clinched?

Was this done hot, as in old constructional steel works, or cold?

By the look of the chassis and fitting plate deformation around the rivets, it looks like they were cold clinched under very high pressure.

Has anyone managed to duplicate this process? It looks a bit hard for a hammer and concave punch!

Thanks, DG
