It probably matters little how they were done originally, as doubtful you'll have access to cold presses - your problem as suggested is the hard yakka to do them hot to be successful. You'll need (a) two rivet sets or snaps both the correct size, (b) to heat rivets to cherry red, (c) one or mare assistants to hold things including the welding torch away from your face, (c) a heavy hammer to start the flattening-down process (d) either continual torching or re-torching between breaks to maintain the heat, (e) to lastly use the second snap to form the shape, (f) somewhere to lie down for a while after. Next day when everything is cool (including yourself), check for any looseness and repeat where necessary. You could avoid all these by finding a blacksmith with (a to e). Good luck. Bill
