It's one of Austin's famous "admiralty" threads. Theory goes that Longbridge had a lot of 16tpi kit hanging around after the great war and used it all over the place on many cars. Rear axle hub nuts are 16tpi aren't the?. It lasted until the end of the Mini which had a 16tpi thread on the crank dog. There's also an "Admiralty Fine" which I recall is 20tpi irrespective of diameter.
