Tried this once as an experiment. It certainly makes the box much quieter but the gear change when cold takes forever!! Also takes forever to get the stuff out again when you decide you want to go back to a thinner oil.

I've since compromised and these days use SAE 50 oil in all my gearboxes which leads to a quieter box but the change, when cold, is OK and, when warm, is normal.
