Bruce,
Re your query about coil springs - the December 2001 edition of the London A7 OC magazine makes mention of an add-on coil attachment produced in the 1920s under the name of the "Nobby Spring Assister". These were claimed to both prevent bottoming and improve road holding. The important point is that these springs are now being re-manufactured by William McKenzie who sells them for GBP 38 + postage etc. I'm thinking of trying them unless my post-Christmas dieting intentions prove more successful than usual.
